Membership Updates

As your Membership Chair, I want to emphasize the crucial role that each and every one of you plays in keeping our club vibrant and appealing. Our club's strength lies in its active and engaged membership. I’m excited to announce that plans for a membership drive event in April are underway, and I’ll be reaching out to members soon to help organize this important initiative. I encourage all members to consider volunteering their time and talents to make this event a success. By working together, we can attract new members and ensure the continued prosperity of our beloved club. Please contact me should you have ideas for the membership event or wish to volunteer. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year!

⛵The Sailing Report...............

Since we ARE a Sailing Club and have quite a few events each year centered around sailing I thought it was time we launched a special section of the TellTale dedicated to the sport. To that end, we had another successful Adult instructional sailing program this year, as well as Junior sailing camp and Governors Cup regatta. We continue to “sell out” of our Junior Sailing program and thanks to John Dudley, we had another successful Adult Instructional Sailing program utilizing our Keel boat Tranquility Base. We plan to continue to expand this program going forward into 2025 by adding another small keel boat and adding some events to the Calendar. If you have participated in the past John is looking for feedback and I believe he sent out an email to the participants looking for responses. Also, if interested in participating in the program for 2025 please let us know by emailing the club.

In addition to the Governor’s Cup, we hope to launch 2 new Regattas for 2025 which are focused on the larger keel boats. We already have a team of sailors working hard behind the scenes to bring you a couple of events that will (hopefully) be almost as fun to watch as to participate in. These won’t be your routine, boring strictly by the rules, USSA sanctioned, Olympic preparing, Vendee Globe type race events, oh no! And while we don’t plan on offending any die-hard sailors, we do plan on making these events every bit as interesting! More to come

A Time for Socializing

Thank you to everyone that came out to the Oktoberfest. It was a lot of fun! The next social is the Oyster Roast this weekend which should also be a ton of fun. There is also a possible Christmas social in December, however we are still in need of a host for that event. Please think about volunteering, it’s a great way to let your creative side show on the club’s dime. Get in touch with Autumn at bariautumn@gmail.com.

The Board of Directors meeting will be November 12th at 6:30pm, as always, members are welcome to join!

Welcome to Falll

Fall has come, which means cooler days and night, and some of the more popular socials at WRYC. Oktoberfest is happening this coming Saturday, October 5. Thanks to all of those that have volunteered to help as well as those that will be in attendance. It will be a great time. The annual Oyster Roast is coming up quick and you can RSVP for that now. I would highly recommend doing so!

Even though the weather is starting to get cooler, there is still plenty of time to get out on the water, or use the club, even if it is just for a nice walk. The club belongs to you, use it!

The Board of Directors meeting is October 8 at 6:30pm. As always, meetings are open to the membership.

From the Helm

2024 has really flown by, but, it has been a great year! August saw the 60th Governor’s Cup, which was great success. A special thanks to Jim Garrett and Scott Titus for the extremely hard work that they put in to organizing everything. There are so many others that volunteered that I am scared to list them individually as I am sure that I will forget someone, but THANK YOU!! The storms and power outage made for a memorable event, yet everything went off perfectly.

On September 1st, there was a game night at the club that was well attended, it is great to see members attending events and enjoying themselves. Your next chance for a good time is coming up quickly, October 5th for Oktoberfest. The event has been planned from Germany by René and Marcus Seiler, and they will be flying over to host it again. Show your support by coming, and if you’re feeling the spirit, throw on your Lederhosen or Dirndln. Mathews and York River Yacht Clubs have been invited and the event is open to the public. I strongly encourage registering sooner rather than later. You can do that on wryc.org or email wareriveryc@gmail.com.

Even though it is September, the water is still warm and the breeze is still blowing. Go out and use the club!

Reminder that Board meetings are always open to the membership and are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm.
